An interview with a journalist: Tean Becoate

Journalism is an ever-evolving and ever-present force in our lives. Whether you’re keeping a close eye on the presidential race and tuning into CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, checking the day’s forecast with weather anchor Maria Quiban, or scouting the next breakout artist, journalism shapes how we see the world.

When it comes to emerging voices in entertainment and culture, independent platforms like Diamond Kut Media are leading the charge. Founded by Tean Becoate, a Harlem-based entrepreneur, Diamond Kut Media has quickly become a go-to destination for discovering underground talent, compelling stories, and fresh cultural commentary.

At just 30 years old, Becoate wears many hats—CEO, journalist, visionary—and his work is leaving a real imprint on the media landscape. I caught up with him recently to hear about his journey, the inspiration behind Diamond Kut Media, and what it takes to stand out in a fast-paced, competitive industry.

Here’s what he had to say.

It is one thing to get into journalism but it's another thing to create your media platform. What inspired you to make that decision? Since I [was] young, I [knew] I would own my own business, and [once] I found my passion, I created my own business to go with it.

How did you come up with Diamond KUT? Ok, so in college I pledged [to] Kappa Alpha Psi. Kappas we love Diamonds, and I was thinking like diamonds in the ruff. The KUT was just me adding a "K" paying homage to Kappa.

What's one thing you wish other publications would stop doing and start doing? One thing, let’s get back to real journalism. Stop copying and pasting post releases and give your opinions. I wish we would focus on more of the positives than the negatives.

As of late, we are seeing a lot of publications either slim down or completely close shop. To see this, happen how does this make you feel? Amazing! It’s time for the next wave of media brands to take over. I look at it like ok Bron out of the league this is my chance to be the best.

What's one thing you wish other publications would stop doing and start doing? One thing, let’s get back to real journalism. Stop copying and pasting, [old] releases, and give your opinions. [Also] I wish we would focus on more of the positives than the negatives.

I'm sure you get submissions every day. What's your process when picking music to cover? Pick whatever we feel is hot or whatever is about to be viral. We also love shedding light on dope music that doesn’t get its recognition.

This is an age where a lot of people are doing the same thing. What keeps you motivated? The progress. To see what I’ve done since 2019 with no mentor, just learning from trial [and] error, I know if I keep going, there's no limit.

To those who are thinking about becoming a journalist or starting a publication, what advice would you give them? Find your niche of what you want to cover and be consistent. Like NBA Youngboy dropping music, type of consistency. Don’t worry about likes or support, it won’t be there at first, just keep going! Have faith and you’ll make it as far as you can dream.
